I have a secret love for Mika.
I suppose it is not so secret now.
Nevertheless, ever since I found his music I have loved it, his Origin of Love album particularly. The rest are a bit too strange for my tastes.
So, at my house I have three of his songs on constant replay, "Celebrate", "Stardust", and, of course, "Popular Song", featuring Ariana Grande.
Let me just say I am obsessed.
Their music video to the song cracks me up every time, which proves my strange sense of humour. :)
But let me give you my favorite part of the song,
"My problem, I never was a model,
I never was a scholar,
But you were always popular,
You were singing all the songs I don't know
Now you're in the front row
'Cause my song is popular
Popular, I know about popular
It's not about who you are or your fancy car
You're only ever who you were
Popular, I know about popular
And all that you have to do is be true to you
That's all you ever need to know
Catch up 'cause you got an awful long way to go"
I never was a scholar,
But you were always popular,
You were singing all the songs I don't know
Now you're in the front row
'Cause my song is popular
Popular, I know about popular
It's not about who you are or your fancy car
You're only ever who you were
Popular, I know about popular
And all that you have to do is be true to you
That's all you ever need to know
Catch up 'cause you got an awful long way to go"
I love it, absolutely, and whether or not Mika knew it when he wrote those lyrics and when he worked in the Wicked lyrics he was writing something that is so deep, further than the skin.
"It's not about who you are or your fancy car You're only ever who you were."
It doesn't matter that you are pretty or that you have the best, you are only the same person with a new appearance. Nothing you have can change that.
So don't go thinking that because you look new or in style or gorgeous that that will cover up all of your flaws or problems, or simply you.
You are only who you were.
Thus, instead of focusing on the outside, focus on the inside. Be more than skin deep.
The best way to be a better person is to start on the inside and work your way out.
And keep God in the picture, because everything he makes is 'fearfully and wonderfully made'.
But remember,
"It's not about who you are or your fancy car You're only ever who you were"
